Western shows at the time: Clint Walker as Cheyenne, Will Hutchins as Sugarfoot and Ty Hardin as Bronco. The second episode here is notable for appearances by stars of other Warner Bros. In his place, Roger Moore (who played a different role in a Season 2 episode) comes aboard as their British cousin Beau, and he fares well enough, trading off with Kelly for most of the season, but then he too departs after just 15 shows. Here, Garner appears in only the 10th episode, which is actually a holdover from Season 3. Garner starred in every other episode for three seasons, trading off with Jack Kelly as his brother Bart, both playing itinerant gamblers who became mixed up in schemes and crimes in the Old West. This clever series, which paved the way for every tongue-in-cheek TV Western that followed, definitely loses some steam with the absence of James Garner’s wit and charm as Bret Maverick. “Maverick: The Complete Fourth Season, Part One & Part Two” (Warner Archive, 1960-61, b/w, eight discs, $49.95, 32 episodes). Also, Season 5 of “NYPD Blue” is finally on DVD. The late 1950s, early ’60s Western series “Maverick” loses James Garner but gains Roger Moore as Season 4 of the popular comedy-drama makes its DVD debut this week.
